NOKOMIS LEARNING CENTER RECEIVES TWO GRANTS FOR NATIVE AMERICAN PROGRAMMING AND DEVELOPMENT

 

Okemos, MI. - The Nokomis Learning Center has received two grants in recent weeks. The Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Council has given the center a $1000 grant towards the development of Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe) Language Resources. The Center plans to use this money to develop a Language CD which will be available for sale after the completion. The CD will be developedwith fluent Anishinaabemowin language speakers over the course of the next year. Proceeds from CD sales will be used to fund future programs at the Nokomis Learning Center.

Additionally, The Nokomis Learning Center has received a $10,000 grant from the Arcus Foundation of Kalamazoo for the development of our 2008 lecture series. The series, entitled MINOBIMAADIZIWIN (Good Life) focuses on the Seven Teachings of the Three Fires Peoples, Humility, Truth, Courage, Honesty, Respect, Love and Wisdom. There will be a total of eight lectures, one related to each teaching, and a final wrap-up session which will include a traditional Anishinaabe feast. The first lecture will be held on February 12th, 2008 and will focus on Dbaadendiziwin (Humilty). This is the second consecutive year in which the Nokomis Learning Center has received funding from the Arcus Foundation.

The Nokomis Native American Cultural Learning Center is dedicated to the preservation and presentation of the history, Arts, and culture of the Anishinaabe people - the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi nations. The Center fulfills this mission through programs, exhibitions and special events.
