Teacher Resources/Curricula

Understanding Michigan Indian Treaties and Soverignty Curriculum

In 2005-2006, the Nokomis Learning Center received funding from the Michigan Humanities Council to develop a curriculum on Michigan Indian treaties, geared toward 4th through 6th grade students. This curriculum is free to download and we encourage you to download all or a portion of the lessons and pass them on to others. The curriculum includes background information for teachers, suggested activities, worksheets, and references for further research. We also have an evaluation form and we value your feedback on this curriculum.

We also offer a 90 minute program taught by Nokomis Learning Center staff that is based on and reinforces the Treaties Curriculum. If you are interested in requesting this program for your group please call the Center at 517.349.5777 and book a date. Be sure to mention that you would like the Treaties and Soverignty Curriculum. This is also available as an off-site presentation through the Nokomis Speaker's Bureau.

Download lessons here. (Some documents are large and all require Adobe Acrobat reader software to view.)

Tour Information

Nokomis Learning Center offers two different programs year round, our standard Native Cycles, Sacred Circles program and our new Understanding Michigan Indian Soverignty and Treaties program. Both can be tailored to fit any age or comprehension level and incourage student interaction and participation. Each is also offered both on-site and off-site.

To learn more about tours, hours, and pricing and to read reviews of Nokomis programming visit our tours and programs page.

Speaker's Bureau

In addition to our regular programming, Nokomis Learning Center is able to offer many other unique experiences for your school or group. Speakers, dancers, drummers, and crafters are available to do programs both on-site, at the Nokomis Center, or at your school, library, or meeting place.

The first step in making a Speaker's Bureau request is to decide what type of program you would like to have. Would you like to learn more about drumming or dancing? Do you want to learn more about the significance of storytelling and oral tradition? Do you want to experience craft work? Whatever the program you're looking for, we can most likely assist you in finding someone to present for your group.

After you have an idea about the kind of presentation you'd like to see, the next step is selecting some dates that work for you. Because our speakers and presenters are not always regular Nokomis staffers, having a few dates in mind helps to ensure that one of those dates will also work for the presenters.

Now that you've thought about a program and have some possible dates in mind, give us a call! We will work with you to find exhibitors and presenters that fit your programming needs.
